Quilted Palm Pilot (PDA) Case
Finished PDA Case

Description

This is an easy to create palm pilot (or other PDA) case. I will give instructions for creating my rendition of a "Split Rail Block" per my completed case. However, if you chose to create your own design, skip the piecing/quilting instructions, gather your pre-quilted/bounded supplies, and go straight to the "Assembly" section.

Supply List

Either Pre-Quilted Fabrics:

  1. One quilted fabric rectangle 11.5" x 6".
  2. One quilted fabric rectangle 13" x 3".
  3. Cooridinating fabric for binding: 2 - 2.5" x WOF strips.
  4. Velcro:
    1. 1" x 2" of Sew On & Adhesive back (for palm pilot)
    2. 1" x 1.5" Sew On (for center "flap")
    3. 1/2 - 3/4" x 3" Sew On (for outer close)
  5. Cooridinating thread

Or My Split Rail Pattern:

***Fat Quarter Friendly -- 4 Fat Quarters for Contrast***
  1. Fabric A: 4 - 2.25" x 6.50" strips
  2. Fabric B: 4 - 3" x 6.50" strips
  3. Fabric C: 4 - 2.25" x 6.50" strips
  4. Fabric D:
    1. 2 - 14" x 4" strips
    2. 1 2.5" x WOF strip* (or 3 - 2.5" x Width of FQ)
  5. Batting: Low Loft - (1) 11.5" x 6" && (1) 14" x 4"
  6. Velcro:
    1. 1" x 2" of Sew On & Adhesive back (for palm pilot)
    2. 1" x 1.5" Sew On (for center "flap")
    3. 1/2 - 3/4" x 3" Sew On (for outer close)
  7. Cooridinating thread
* If Width of Fabric is not 44", use 2 strips to ensure enough fabric for the corners

Split Rail Fence Blocks

Assemble the Split Rail Fence Block:
  • Create 4 units with Fabric A & Fabric B RST*
  • On Two units, press seam allowance towards Fabric B, and the other two towards Fabric A.
  • Add Fabric C to the first unit, RST, and press the blocks in the same direction
(You should have 2 Rail Fence blocks with seam allowance pressed towards center, and 2 with seam allowance pressed towards outer strips.)
  • Layer the 4 blocks, 2 at a time, with Fabric A and Fabric C at opposing ends:
    Rail Fence Layout
  • On the back of the two sets, draw a diagonal line (simply making HST here).
  • Sew 1/4" away from both sides of the diagonal line.
  • Cut the Split Rail apart on the diagonal line.
  • Press seams OPEN and trim dog ears.
  • You should now have 2 each of these blocks:
    Rail Fence Layout
  • Sew the two pieces together, creating two pairs, just as they are laid out above.
  • Press seam allownace OPEN.
*Right Sides Together

Create the two Quilt Sandwiches

Main PDA Body:
  1. Layer the two Split Rail sections, right sides facing out, and batting in the middle.
  2. Quit in desired pattern.
  3. Fold binding strip in half, WST*, and press.
  4. Apply binding.
*Wrong Sides Together Center Flap:
  1. Layer the sandwich: batting, first piece of Fabric D, right side up, second piece of Fabric D, RST.
  2. Leaving about 2" for turning, sew a 1/4" seam around the entire sandwich, backstitching at beginning, and end.
  3. Trim the batting just after the seam, clip the corners off close to the stitching, and turn the unit right side out.
  4. Fold the opening to create a seam allowance, and top stitch 1/8" from the edge of the entire piece.
***You can add extra quilting to this unit if you desire.***

Assembly

  1. Fold the PDA outer section in half to find the halfway point. Mark with a pin.
  2. Repeat to find the middle of the long section.
  3. Line up the pieces, matching middle points. The bottom portion of the "flap" should extend approximately 4" past the bottom of the main unit. Put a pin to mark that place.
  4. Lie your PDA on top, and fold the bottom flap up, and the top flap down, to determine placement of your velcro.
(Your finished dimensions might be slightly different than mine.)
If you do not have a PDA, or are making this as a gift, then attach the soft loop piece of the 1" x 1.5" velco to the top flap (as in picture below), centered, 1" from the top.

Then, flip that piece over and sew the hook portion centered, 1/2" from the edge, or "bottom". (It is on the flip side, opposite end.)

Next, take the hook side of the 1" x 2" sew-on velcro and attach it centered on the middle flap, with the top of the velcro aligned 5" down from the top of the flap.
You will want the velcro approximately 5" down from the top of the flap, centered. Lay your PDA out for placement, however, as you may need to adjust it so that your battery compartment is not blocked. You will be putting the soft side of the adhesive 1" x 2" piece on the back of your PDA.
  5. Once you have the layout planned, and the velcro attached to the flap, it is time to stitch it down. Following the diagram, the white lines, below, line up your flap (remember you marked the 4" mark for the bottom", and stitch the flap to the main case like the bold line below. (You will be creating a pocket underneath the flap.)
  6. Stitch the rest of the velcro pieces down per the diagram, and you are done!

Closing Thoughts

This pattern can be easily modified to add more pockets, a stylus loop, or just decorative trim. Imagine putting two long button holes in the back center of the main case. You could then loop it through your belt! So add some of your own creativity to the pattern. Be sure to share any ideas that you come up with me.
