Cutting Instructions

Print the cutting diagram so that you can follow the directions easily. You may choose to use sticky notes to keep track of the pieces. I found that I could easily eyeball them. I actually used some of my 10" swap squares to splice together for some of the pieces, but you don't have to do that. I cut my background fabric in strips as follows (all @ WOF):

Then, I cut the pieces down from there. You will also need a 10" blue square, a 8" yellow square, and a 6" green square for the circles. Again, you can use any colors you like.

Piecing Instructions

Begin assembling the pieces according to the rows on the cutting diagram and refer to the cooridinating piece on the pieces diagram. You may prefer to press your seams open since you will be getting a lot of bulk. Once you have assembled each rows, then sew the rows together to form your quilt top.

When doing Row 5, first strip piece the background 3.5" x WOF strip to the blue 1.5" x WOF strip. Press the seams to the blue, or open. Now, cut this down into 15 subcuts @ 1.5" wide. Trim one of the new sub-units to 3.5", you will be trimming off the excess BACKGROUND fabric. This piece will go at the end of the top row of this subsection. Trim one more down to 2.5". This will go at the end of the middle row. Then, unsew one of the blue squares from the sub-units to go at the end of the third row. You will be using a 1.5" x 1.5" square of background fabric at the beginning of the middle row, and a 2.5" x 1.5" square of background fabric at the beginning of the third row. (Please let me know if this doesn't make sense. If you look at the diagram, it should be pretty clear.)

Your finished top so far should look like this:

That ends this session. The next session will be posted around April 5th.
