Frank Lloyd Wright Stained Glass Quilt
Course #202View Class Project Drawing
- Class Name: Stained Glass Quilting
- Class Instructor: Kimberly Crapsey (KDC Smiles)
- Class Begins: March 1, 2002
- Class Ends: March 30, 2002, or longer if necessary.
- Class Description: A short introduction to stained glass quilting. We will create a bright quilted wall-hanging ala Frank Lloyd Wright, the famous architect. Think geometric. You may use prepared fusible bias or follow class instructions for creating fusible bias on your own.
- Class Objectives: To learn to create your own fusible bias for "leading", and how to affix it to the quilt top nicely. To create a beautiful, stained-glass, quilted, wallhanging.
- Class Results: A stained glass wallhanging.
- Class Materials Needed:
- 1 roll of Clover fusible black bias tape (1/4")
OR
- A ¼" bias tape maker (available at most retail fabric shops)
OR a ¼" fusible bias tape maker available from www.nancysnotions.com Item #FBT25
AND
- A ¼" fusible webbing roll. Steam-a-seam makes some that you can purchase at Joann’s, or somewhere similar. Please be sure that the fusible that you select is double sided with paper lining on one side. (Stitch witchery will NOT work.)
AND
- 1 Yard (you will have left overs) of a black solid. I suggest Moda Marble, but if you can only get retail, try a Kona cotton. If you dare, get the lame, but only if you dare.
- *Optional* : Clover or other mini-iron (save your fingers from burns.)
- *Optional*: 3mm twin sewing machine needle. (This will make the sewing down of your bias leading so much faster.)
- Background fabric: 1 yard (You may use white, or a soft pastel color. Think about real stained glass windows and imagine the glistening look of the background glass.)
You will then need red, orange, yellow, green, and blue scraps according to the cutting diagram. I will give some approximates below:
- Red: 1/4 yard or 1 fat quarter.
- Orange: 1/4 yard or 1 fat quarter.
- Yellow: 1/4 yard or 1 fat quarter.
- Green: 1/4" yard or 1 fat quarter.
- Blue: 1/2 yard or 2 fat quarters.
*Note, I am using Moda Marbles. You may use any color or fabric that you like. Batiks and hand dyed fabrics work well also. Avoid any directional fabrics that might make your cutting more difficult.- 1 yard of backing material.
- 1 yard of fleece or low-loft quilt batting.
- Used dryer sheets or LIGHTWEIGHT fusible webbing for the appliqued circles.
- Threads of your choice. I like the Sulky irridescent threads, they give a nice glisten when used for quilting.
